What on earth is GURPS and, more importantly, is it contagious?

GURPS is an acronym for Generic Universal RolePlaying System. With just a little effort, GURPS can help you model virtually any setting for any roleplaying campaign.

If you would like a free look at GURPS, download GURPS Lite. I try to keep that copy up to date but you can always be sure of finding the most up to date copy at e23 (note that you can check without registering so long as you're only getting the free downloads).
