James was a soldier in the Lognian occupation by Pollexia, then returned to his native land where he worked as a carpenter and sometime adventurer. Although his exact skills were a mystery to most, he had some ability with daggers, and perhaps had "sticky fingers."
James became a character in the Westaven Campaign just after the "Confronting Gharvsmin" event (he met the men returning to town after their battle). Joining up with the men, he became an innocent bystander injured in the "Battle of the Merchants' Guildhall", after which he was healed by First Selectman Marnor--who (underhandedly) had a copy made of a scroll among James's possessions. This mysterious scroll lead to many major events starting with "The Scroll, the Oracle, & The Holy Isle". James himself began this sequence of events, but did not finish, for after killing the savage Gore aboard the slave ship Manacle, he was summarily executed as a murderer (see "The Manacle Debacle")
